On 3 July 2026, a recycling and waste-treatment facility in Vienna-Donaustadt caught fire. 120 firefighters and 31 vehicles responded, and the A23 — Austria's busiest motorway — was closed in both directions. That was not just a fire. It was a reminder that batteries and their end-of-life streams are no longer simply products. They are strategic assets that demand transparency, safety and intelligent lifecycle management.

From 18 February 2027, Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 requires a Digital Battery Passport for every EV, light-transport and industrial battery above 2 kWh placed on the EU market — trusted digital information across the entire lifecycle. The question is no longer whether we need a Battery Passport. The question is: who will build the ecosystem around it?
